If I had a toothache, I would go to a dentist for help. My expectation would be that the dentist would have some specialized training to relieve the tooth pain. I have a great dentist. He has the requisite training, and, being a godly man, I believe he listens to the leading of the Spirit too. However, I would not see a dentist who, however well- intentioned and spirit-led, did not have the basic training. Would you? Likewise, people come to church leaders every day with the expectation that they will be able to help heal the emotional and spiritual pain. Unfortunately, many of our church leaders do not have even an introductory course in prayer ministry or discipleship counselling and end up causing further damage.
Jesus’ ministry began with the following announcement, recorded in Luke 4: 18-19 (NRSV).
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and
recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
I believe that, as Jesus’ followers, it is the mandate for all believers to be able to bring good news, release the captives, restore sight and let the oppressed go free! Granted, the wounds in some people’s lives may require more expertise than you currently possess.
