Three Responsibilities of Parents to Their Children

Scripture is fairly clear regarding the responsibility of parents to their children.  Operating under godly authority, parents are to provide the following basic needs for their children:

  1. Food and other basic physical requirements:   Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!  (Matthew 7:9-11 NRSV).
  2. Spiritual direction and other life skills:  The book of proverbs is written to instruct in wisdom, and is directed toward a son.  Hear, my child, your father’s instruction, and do not reject your mother’s teaching; for they are a fair  garland for your head, and pendants for your neck  (Proverbs 1: 8-9, NRSV).
  3. Provision for the future:  This is indicated in scripture by the father’s role of blessing and providing a spiritual, material and emotional inheritance for his children.  (Luke 15:11-31; Genesis 49 and others)
